Latest update to students and parents: week beginning 20th June 2022

Dear Parent(s),

It is hard to believe it is only two weeks to the summer holidays and that another busy school year is almost passed.  Our final two weeks of term have a lot happening.  This week are our S1 Induction Days, and it is lovely that we are returning to face-to-face for the first time in three years.  We have a great programme of events for our young people joining us from our ten feeder primaries and some who are arriving from further afield.  All will be made to feel welcome.

In the final week of term, we have our annual Prizegiving events.  In thinking about keeping things as safe as possible for people, we are going to hold the event on Tuesday, 28th June 2022 for our Senior Phase students and families only.  Our BGE students will have their achievements recognised during school time over the final week and more information will follow about this for families later this week.

Wednesday, 29th June at 19.00 sees the return of our Summer Concert in the Main Hall and tickets go on sale for this on Monday, 20th June 2022 at 19.00.  You can purchase your tickets for this event here.

The final Thursday of term sees Sports Day taking place for all and this event will kick start our Inter-house competition for the week ahead.  Sports Day is an inclusive event for all and we will have activities that all students can take part in and earn house points on the day.  We hope that everyone will think about their commitment to their house and ensure that the colours on the day reflect this.  Our Senior Student Ambassadors will be taking the lead on this and as long as the weather remains kind it should be a fantastic day.  We are also delighted that our PTA and Stonehaven Lions are providing their BBQ stall again so students will be able to get plenty of food and refreshments on the day.  Students are also welcome to bring packed lunches and please note that our canteen will only be open for breakfast that day.

I have had the delight over the past week of meeting with our S3-S6 Student Ambassadors.  What a fabulous group of young people and it will be great to get started working with them on Mackie Academy’s Improvement Journey over the course of the final two weeks of term and beyond.  Our work with our new S1 and S2 students as part of this team will take place in the Autumn term once we return to school.

There are quite a few updates on our Pupil and Parent Information site this week.  These include:

School News page

  •  Our dress code for 2022-23
  • Parent consultation on residential Educational Visits at Mackie Academy – open until Friday, 1st July 2022
  • Parent Council update for June 2022
  • School Leavers Toolkit

The Local Authority page contains an update on Free School Meals and associated grants as well as ongoing consultations open to parents about school uniform.

Our Health and Wellbeing page is full of information about summer holiday activities and support for young people.

Finally, I am delighted to announce that the school is planning to put on a school show in June 2023.  At this time, we are planning for the production of “Grease”.  We hope this can be an event that brings both the school and local community together and therefore we would like to put a request out there to you.  There are lots of different roles to be fulfilled such as lighting, sound, stage crew, set design, promotion and administration, hair and make-up, ticket sales, singing, choreography, acting, front of house and hospitality, sponsorship, back stage, costume and more.  If you think you could help out in any way – small, medium or large – please get in contact with Heather Rennie, Faculty Head of Performing Arts, on Heather.Rennie@aberdeenshire.gov.uk

I will be back in contact with one final update before the end of term including our end of term newsletter.

Take care everyone,

Ms Moir
