Latest Update to Students and Parents: week beginning 09.05.22

Dear Students and Parent(s) / Carer(s),

This week sees the school hosting a team from Education Scotland and Aberdeenshire Council for a recovery visit.  The school was given the opportunity to host such a visit and we are delighted that the team are coming to see us in action.  After two challenging years we feel there is lots of positive experiences that we want to share as well as reflecting on what we have learnt and how we are going to put that into practice, as part of our improvement planning process, going forwards.  Not only will be the team be speaking with staff and students they will also be speaking with our Parent Council members as well as partners from our local community and businesses over the course of Monday and Tuesday this week.  The school then receives feedback on their experiences, and we look forward to sharing that with you soon.  It is going to be a busy couple of days for us so if it takes a little longer for us to respond than usual you know why.

The SQA exams continue and so far, there has been relatively little to report beyond the fact that our young people are rising to the challenges set by the first exam period in three years admirably.  There is still some time to go but we are very impressed by what we have seen so far.  Remember that if you need any information at all you can go to the SQA page of the Pupil and Parent Information Site.  Alongside this information you will find resources to help with stress and anxiety around the examination process as well as resources to help both students and parents with exam revision.  If you need to talk to anyone directly about SQA exam issues please contact Mrs Nicola Hamilton, DHT and SQA Co-ordinator, on Nicola.Hamilton@aberdeenshire.gov.uk

There are some updates for pupils and parents on our Pupil and Parent Information Site including:

On our School News page there is information about upcoming summer holidays activities and opportunities for our young people whilst on our Learning and Teaching page there is a new infographic to help parents understand how restorative practices work for us here at Mackie Academy.

I am delighted to say that we have had lots of applications for the role of student ambassadors in S4-S6 next academic year.  I am going to be visiting our current S2 pupils from next week onwards in their PSE lessons to speak to them more about this role and our Junior Executive Team for S3 2022-23.  It will be great to have this time and look at how they can support the S1 and S2 pupils going forwards.

Our work on school uniform continues for the new academic year and we will soon be publishing a short consultation for parents to gain your views based on what our students are saying.  The aim of this consultation is to ensure that we have a uniform for school that is fit for purpose, is cost effective for families, and enables our school community to be identifiable wherever they are.  This should be with you, as parents, week beginning 23rd May 2022 with all decisions in place by the end of the summer term for August 2022.

Finally, and with the final relaxations around Covid 19 guidance, we are starting to talk again about educational visits and, more specifically, residential experiences going forwards.  We started the discussion at Parent Council last week and, again, want to talk with students and parents about their thoughts going forwards before we make any decisions.  Again, we will aim to do this over the course of the rest of this summer term so that we can move things forwards at the start of the new term in August.  Our Parent Council is an important mechanism for the voice of our Parent forum to be heard so if you have any views on this you can, as always, email them directly to the Parent Council on mackiepc@hotmail.co.uk

Have a good week everyone,

Louise Moir
