Latest update to our Learning Community: February 2024

And so February is upon us already – where did January go?  If this is an indication of the speed that 2024 is going to take then Mackie Academy is certainly keeping up with the pace.

First of all I want to pass on my thanks to our senior students during their January assessment window.  Our invigilator team are drawn from across the spectrum and all they had was praise for the way our young people conducted themselves during this time, especially on those days that were disrupted by the weather.  This sets them up well for the SQA exam session in April and May 2024 if they have made the most of the experience just now.  From this comes a busy remaining Spring Term as they get their results from these assessments, speak through their progress at the upcoming Senior Phase parents’ evenings online with staff and learn about where staff expect them to be on the other side of the final assessment window later this year.  On top of that those young people staying on in the Senior Phase for S5 or S6 have their options process to consider and that is now in full swing through to the beginning of March.  A busy and exciting time for next steps – the important matter is to inform yourselves (both students and parents) of all the options that are out there so that the right decisions can be made for future years.

Our Mackie Academy Pupil and Parent Information Site has been updated with quite a significant amount of information this month so we would ask that you take a look and keep yourselves up to date. There are five key sections:

School News – relevant and up to date information for you as parents and carers.  New information you may wish to take a look at includes:

  • Safer Internet Day Resources that may help you and your young person including smartphone safety tips.
  • Aberdeenshire Parents Work and Play Expo: 13th February 2024 at P&J Live
  • How to get involved as a lay member with Education Scotland

National and Local Authority News – information for you as parents and carers from Aberdeenshire Council and wider afield around education in Scotland and issues that impact on you and your child.  New information includes:

  • Information about Free School Meal payments for the February mid-term.

Curriculum Pathways and SQA Information – all information related to SQA issues as well as our curriculum sites to help you understand more about what your child is studying and the options available to them.  Information of use there here and now is all you need related to S3 and Senior Phase options for 2024-25

Learning and Teaching at Mackie Academy  – key information about how learning and teaching works here at Mackie Academy.  Worth noting here is access to learning for young people should there be disruption to the school day due to weather.

Health, Wellbeing and Support at Mackie Academy – information to support you as parents and carers around key issues associated with young people and family’s wellbeing such as social media use and keeping yourself safe online.  The issues of vaping and social media use by our young people continue to be of concern to everyone so we have all the information here you require to help you, as parents, tackle those conversations.

Again, good news stories abound from January with our netball teams continuing to go from strength to strength in national competitions and our young musicians and chefs also continuing to have an impact regionally and nationally in Rotary competitions.  We cannot wait to hear about the next steps in their journeys.

A reminder that the school is closed to students from Friday, 9th February to Wednesday, 14th February 2024 inclusive for the mid-term break and training days for staff.  We look forward to welcoming back our young people on Thursday, 15th February 2024.

Take care everyone,

Louise Moir
