DYW News – November 2019

November has been a very busy month for DYW at Mackie.

S3 Work Experience applications for next June are in full swing. S3 pupils should get their work experience forms into Mrs Donald in the office before the Christmas break.

A group of S2 pupils took part in the “Build Your Future” event at Stewart Milne in Westhill. The pupils showed outstanding teamwork and problem solving skills and have secured a place in the final at Aberdeen Football Club at the end of January.

The S3 Employability class had a visit from the Army to talk about the range of careers available in the Armed Forces. This is the first of an ongoing programme where employers will come in to class to talk to pupils about different careers and share their story of how they got to where they are now. We are also undertaking the Vodafone Digital Creator’s Challenge to help develop Digital Skills.

Some of our S6 Advanced Higher pupils were lucky enough to attend a series of workshops delivered by Bill Kirton, an author and lecturer from the Royal Literary Fund to learn more about academic writing techniques.

College pupils studying Hospitality hosted a Halloween party at NESCOL for parents and staff. There was some fantastic teamwork being demonstrated and delicious food served to invited guests.

A group of Senior Pupils attended the Skills Scotland event at TECA on November 12th and had the opportunity to pick up some information, advice and guidance about future career pathways and have a meaningful interaction with employers, further education and higher education providers.

The 29th October saw the DYW North East Tasty Careers event. This allowed pupils and parents the opportunity to explore the diversity of pathways and career opportunities available to young people within the growing food, drink and agriculture industry and hear directly from industry professionals and pupils who are already gaining work experience within the food and drink sector.

What’s next?

In December we’ll be busy planning our Senior Phase Evening which takes place on the 10th February for S3-S5 pupils and parents – save the date!

There will also be a S3 specific Learners and Careers Pathways event on Monday 20th January for parents to learn more about the different pathways pupils have available.

We are also in the process of finalising the exciting range of choices available in the Senior Phase next year and we are planning some exciting work for next year with our employer partners. Watch this space!
