Mackie DYW News January 2020
DYW News – January 2020
A happy new year to all of our pupils and parents. It’s been a busy month for us here at Mackie.
We held the first S3 Learner and Career Pathways evening on the 20th January for parents of S3 pupils. This gave parents an opportunity to learn more about the pathways available through the Senior Phase and beyond. The three sessions offered were:
Feedback from the event was very positive and we plan to repeat the event next year.
Build Your Future Final
10 pupils were involved in the Build Your Future event at AFC Pittodrie Stadium on 30th January. Mackie made it to the final 10 out of an original 30 schools who took part in the heats. Pupils engaged in a number of teamwork activities and had the chance to meet representatives from the Construction industry including Stewart Milne and Aberdeen player Shay Logan who is undertaking training to become a plumber alongside his football career.
Our SDS in school careers advisors have had the mammoth task of interviewing every S3 pupil about their future career aspirations and offering advice about suitable subject choices. Pupils who are unsure about future career options can arrange for a chat with Mhairi or Angus to find out more.
My WoW Ambassadors
Our My World of Work Ambassadors were involved in helping out at the S2 parents evening. You may have been approached by one of them to demonstrate the My World of Work website during the event. With Subject Choices due soon you may wish to have a look at the Subject Choice Tool to get an insight into what subjects pupils should look to take if they have a particular career in mind.
The My WoW Ambassadors are also getting involved in Pupil Profiling to ensure pupils are able to capture key aspects of their learning.
Subject Choice Season is about to begin in earnest. Pupils should read information about their subject choices carefully and ask for support if required. Pupil assemblies will take place the week beginning the 3rd February to provide more information and advice to pupils. We have more choice available than ever including some new Foundation Apprenticeships. Pupils looking for advice about Foundation Apprenticeships should speak to Mrs Angel to find out more. Aberdeenshire Council have put together a YouTube playlist that demonstrates some of the opportunities and benefits that current students have enjoyed.
Senior Phase Evening
The Mackie Academy Senior Phase Pathways Evening this year is on Monday 10th February 2020 from 5.00-7.00pm in and around the front of school. The evening welcomes current S3, S4 and S5 pupils and their parents in preparation for their Senior Phase Option Choices in 2020-21. This evening is part of the process for making decisions about pupil course choices in and future learner and career pathways. Even if you are not sure that you wish to remain at Mackie Academy it is an excellent opportunity to look at other pathways available to you elsewhere.
The event is structured around three pathways:
- Pathways through the Curriculum – Our teaching staff will be on hand to answer your questions about the pathways through the different subject areas on offer at Mackie Academy
- Pathways through Further and Higher Education – Representatives from NESCOL, D&A College and various Universities are available to provide advice and support about future study options
- Pathways through Industry – Our flagship partners and other representatives of industry can advise you on career pathways and apprenticeship opportunities
We look forward to seeing you there. No booking is required and whether you can manage along for 30 minutes, an hour or the full length of the evening you are more than welcome.
