Update to Pupils and Parents: 02.07.20

Dear Pupils and Parent(s),

It is nearly the end of the academic year 2019-20 and what a year it has been.  It is certainly not one any of us will forget.  Tonight would have been our Prizegiving event in “normal” circumstances but this has been no normal year.  To celebrate the end of term, end of year and for some of our pupils the end of their time at Mackie Academy we will be releasing on Friday, 3rd July 2020 at 2pm our final celebration.  This will be slightly different to previous years but will showcase the best of our learning community’s achievements this year as well as a different approach to Prizegiving.  Keep an eye on your phones, the website and Twitter as we will be sending the information out to pupils and parents through these channels for you to access.  We genuinely hope you take the time to look at all the great things that have been achieved this year by the school.

To precede this our Mackie Academy Music team are presenting a Mackie Academy Acoustic Night on Thursday, 2nd July 2020 at 7pm.  This will be streamed through our Mackie Music You Tube channel and will be a closed event for pupils and parents of Mackie Academy.  The school will post the code on its Twitter account nearer the time as well as it being available to pupils through the Acoustic Night Google classroom.  Another great way to celebrate the end of the term.

The Mackie Academy Pupil and Parent Information Site now contains a key document for our return to school in August which can be found in the banner at the top of each page.  It outlines how the start of term will work for our young folk and the planning that is going into that return.  We are having a phased return to school over the first three days so please make sure that you read through the information carefully and that pupils access their PSE Google classroom today or tomorrow so that they know which day they are attending school on.  There are also further updates around activities available for families over the summer break so please have a look through the remainder of the site.  For our new S1 parents you can find the results of the feedback from our transition events on your page here.

For those awaiting SQA results you will find all the information you require on the home page of the site related to how the post results service will work after results are published on 4th August 2020.  Please make sure you read this carefully should this apply to you so that you know what to do should you need to contact the school.

Please note that as of Friday, 3rd July 2020 the school office will be closed until Monday, 3rd August 2020.  At that time Mackie Academy can be contacted from 09.00 – 15.00 Monday to Friday on 01569 690550 where any queries you may have will be directed to the relevant person or people to be answered.  Please remember that the school will only have two members of the office team in that week so the preferred method of contact is by emailing mackie.aca@aberdeenshire.gov.uk and your email will be redirected as appropriate.  Full service in the office will resume on Monday, 10th August 2020.

As we head towards the final day of term we have some goodbyes to say.  To all our leavers in S4, S5 and S6 we wish you all the best in the future and please come back and see us when things have returned to some level of normality.  It would be lovely to see you.  We also say goodbye to staff members this term.  Mrs Smith, Biology and Science, retires from the school after 37 years.  She is one of Mackie Academy’s longest serving members of staff and it has been a privilege to have her as a member of staff in the school.  Mrs Katsaitis, Mathematics, leaves the school after 16 years to move onto pastures new in Greece.  She will be missed by all and, as a stalwart of many Mackie Academy educational visits, will take many great memories with her.  We also say goodbye to Mrs Beeley, PT Pupil Support and Attainment for Ury House, who is retiring after 14 years at the school.  Mrs Beeley has led on many key developments in the school, not least the LGBTQ+ and Young Carers agendas which have made a difference to so many.  Whilst there is still work for us to do she passes on a strong mantle to Mr Ian Diamond who will join the team in August.  Finally, Mrs Cowie-Geddes leaves us after four years.  She is a little preoccupied at the moment as she gave birth to a baby boy last week.  We really enjoyed our staff “virtual” leavers do on Wednesday and wish everyone all the best in the future.

Finally, to finish off this final message of the academic year, I cannot think of a better way than to reflect on the collaboration that has got us to where we are.  We, as a school, could not have done this without the support of all our community and I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every pupil, staff member and parent in our local community for that support.  It really has made all the difference.  Take a few moments and listen to what our young folk have been doing collaboratively here and I am sure you will be as impressed as I was.

Have a relaxing summer break.  Updates will resume for pupils and parents on Monday, 3rd August 2020 and I look forward to speaking with you then,

Louise Moir
