Dear Parent(s),

As the summer term draws to a close it is hard to believe that another academic year is almost past and what a year it has been for Mackie Academy and Scottish education.  In order to ensure that you are kept up to date with key developments there are a few items for me to bring to your attention:

Scottish Government and Aberdeenshire Council Information

Recent government documentation on parental engagement and involvement in Scottish schools has been published and may be of interest to you in terms of your role as a parent but also in terms of what it means for the school your child attends.  If you wish to read more about this you can find the relevant documents on our website or by clicking on the link here.

In addition to this please find attached a letter below from the Director of Education, Maria Walker, regarding parental engagement as we go forwards into the academic year 2017-18.

PARENTAL ENGAGEMENT LETTER FROM MARIA WALKER SUMMER 2017

Parent Council Information

The Parent Council would also like to say the following with regards to the survey they recently conducted online,

Many thanks to all the parents/carers who filled in our recent survey. We received 191 responses (around 25% of Mackie families). We asked what the Parent Council should focus on and top was proposed changes at the school, then curriculum issues, pupil attainment, pupil behaviour, school buildings and parental complaints. We discussed the survey at the Parent Council meeting on 21st June 2017 and will use it to plan our work over the next year. We will also work through all the individual comments about what changes people would like to see and comments on school transport. We will report back on this work via email (the most popular way for us to contact you). You can get a summary of what people said in the survey at the Parent Council Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 30th August at 7pm in Mackie Academy.

School Information

A little advance warning but on Tuesday, 5th September 2017 from 16.30 – 19.00 Mackie Academy is going to be hosting a community health and wellbeing event focusing on how adults can support young people with the key issues they face today.  Formal sessions are available that you can book onto from 21st August 2017 or you can just drop in past and chat with professionals and workers on the information stalls whilst enjoying a cup of tea and a nibble.  Further information can be found on our website or by clicking the link here.

We are full steam ahead this summer with the Main Block curtain walling project here at Mackie Academy.  An investment of £1 million is being made to improve the learning and teaching environment in the Main Block through the replacement of windows and exterior building materials.  An update for this project is attached below and we will continue to liaise with parents on this project throughout its lifespan.  The projected end date for the build is the end of December 2017.

CURTAIN WALLING PROJECT UPDATE TO PARENTS 21.06.17

The school would like to return to the issue of school uniform just prior to the summer break and remind both pupils and parents of our school uniform guidance.  A copy of this is attached so that if you are buying new items this summer you can use the attached document below to ensure that it will be meet requirements.  The key issues from the school’s perspective that we need support from parents on is:

  • No jeans or jean like materials for trousers
  • Skirts that follow the “finger tip” rule (our pupils know what that means!)
  • No leggings
  • Plain black jumpers as opposed to hoodies of any form
  • Wearing of blazers

UNIFORM MACKIE ACADEMY 2017-18

We have been clear with our young people around expectations of uniform if they anticipate going out of school and representing Mackie Academy out with the core curriculum.  We get huge amounts of positive feedback around how the majority of our young people dress here at Mackie Academy and first impressions last.  We have our new cohort of S1 pupils arriving in August 2017 and it helps us massively if our older pupils take pride in their appearance.

Thank you in advance for your support on this matter.

Finally, a massive thank you for your support this year.  Our young people do us proud here at Mackie Academy and that is only achieved through effective partnerships with our parent body.  We look forward to working with you in the year ahead.  The end of term newsletter is now published and can be found here.

Have a lovely summer break.
